Choosing Film for Double-Pane Windows

Insulated glass can be a great candidate for film — with the right review first.

Why insulated glass is different

Double- and triple-pane windows trap air or gas between sealed layers of glass. When film absorbs some solar energy on the inner pane, that pane can get warmer than the outer one. Under some conditions, uneven heating can add thermal stress to the glass or the seal.

That doesn't mean film is off-limits. It means the combination of film, glass type, pane size, and sun exposure should be checked against the film manufacturer's guidance.

Information that helps the review

  • Approximate window age and whether it's original to the home
  • Any manufacturer marks etched in a corner of the glass
  • Whether you know if it has a Low-E coating or tint
  • Pane size and how much direct sun it receives
  • Signs of seal failure such as fogging between panes

Window warranties

Some window manufacturers address aftermarket film in their warranty terms. Check your window documentation or contact the manufacturer before applying film if warranty coverage matters to you.

The bottom line

Every MyTintKit request goes through a compatibility review before any order is finalized. If we don't think a film is a good match for your glass, we'll say so.
